1. Introduction
This Cookie Policy explains how SpeechMe uses cookies and similar technologies when you use our application at app.speechme.app. It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy and GDPR Policy. SpeechMe is operated by Eric Deaville trading as Apps n SaaS.
We use the term "cookies" throughout this policy to cover cookies, localStorage, sessionStorage, and similar browser technologies.
2. What cookies we use
2.1 Strictly necessary (no consent required)
These are essential for the app to function and cannot be disabled without breaking the service:
- Supabase authentication tokens — Stored in localStorage to maintain your authenticated session. Without these you cannot log in or access your speeches.
- Locale preference — Stored in localStorage to remember your selected region (en-GB, en-US, or en-AU).
- Onboarding state — Stored in localStorage to track whether you have completed onboarding, preventing repeated display.
- PWA service worker cache — The service worker caches app assets for offline capability and faster loading. Essential for PWA functionality.
- Session token — A temporary token to associate speech creation with your session before authentication is complete.
- Cloudflare Turnstile — During onboarding, Cloudflare Turnstile protects against automated abuse. It may set cookies prefixed
cf_or__cf. These are strictly necessary for security, do not track you across websites, and are not used for advertising. Governed by Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.
2.2 Functional
These enhance your experience but are not strictly essential:
- Speech draft state — Locally cached speech data to prevent loss if you navigate away or lose connectivity.
- Audio playback preferences — Remembering your preferred voice and playback speed.
- Display name — Stored in localStorage for personalised prompts throughout the app.
2.3 Third-party
- Paddle — When you make a payment, Paddle's checkout overlay may set cookies for payment processing and fraud detection. Governed by Paddle's cookie policy.
- Supabase — Authentication and API communication may involve session management cookies.
- Cloudflare — As described above.
3. No analytics or advertising cookies
SpeechMe does not use advertising or retargeting cookies, social media tracking pixels, third-party analytics platforms (such as Google Analytics or Mixpanel), or cross-site tracking of any kind. We do not share data with advertising networks.
If we introduce any analytics in the future, we will communicate this and implement an appropriate consent mechanism before any such cookies are set.
4. Cookie consent
Under UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), strictly necessary cookies do not require consent. As SpeechMe only uses strictly necessary and functional cookies — with no tracking or advertising — we do not display a cookie consent banner within the application. Cloudflare Turnstile falls under the strictly necessary exemption.
5. Data stored locally
The following data is stored in your browser's localStorage rather than transmitted as traditional cookies. It remains on your device and is only sent to our servers as part of authenticated API requests:
- Authentication session tokens
- Locale and region preference
- Onboarding completion flag
- Display name
6. Managing cookies
Since SpeechMe primarily uses strictly necessary cookies and localStorage, disabling them may prevent the app from functioning correctly. However, you can manage them as follows:
- Clear localStorage — This will log you out and reset your preferences. Available via your browser's developer tools or privacy settings.
- Browser cookie settings — You can block or delete cookies through your browser's privacy settings. Blocking essential cookies will prevent authentication.
- Unregister service worker — Via your browser's developer tools if you wish to remove cached assets.
- Cloudflare Turnstile cookies — Session-scoped and cleared when you close your browser.
7. Changes to this policy
We may update this Cookie Policy to reflect changes in our use of cookies or applicable regulations. The effective date at the top indicates the latest revision.
